Peace Finally Got a Day… Humanity generously kept the other 364 for itself. Today is the "International Day of Peace" (established by the UN 45 years ago, in 1981). This year’s UN theme is "Investing in Peace.” Quite timely. We do like investing. In missiles, drones, fighter jets, air defence systems and almost anything else that, with the right press release, can later be described as serving the cause of peace. There is no shortage of peacemakers either. One bombs in order to bring peace. Another supplies weapons to preserve it. A third issues an ultimatum to enforce it. A fourth holds a press conference to explain that all of this is, naturally, in the interest of stability. Peace is slowly becoming less the opposite of war. More its marketing department. Perhaps one day it will actually arrive. Until then, at least it has its own international day. Twenty-four hours. For the moment, the world has not dared entrust it with much more.
