Would You Like Some Weapons, Mr. President? According to the U.S. ambassador, Trump asked Xi Jinping whether he would be interested in buying American weapons. Trump denied it. Then he suggested that perhaps the ambassador had meant Taiwan. Well, that is reassuring. When selling weapons, it generally helps to know which side the buyer is on. Trump then added that China would probably like American weapons because they are better, and that selling them some might not be such a bad idea after all. The State Department quickly pointed out that U.S. law happens to prohibit this. A minor administrative obstacle standing in the way of a good deal. If this is the new diplomacy, it may be worth bringing the missile catalogue to the next meeting with Kim Jong Un. And perhaps directing Putin to the air-defense department.
