Notes
Death, Wrapped in the Flag On December 3, the Pentagon plans to livestream Nidal Hasan’s execution by firing squad. Hegseth says people need to see the serious consequences of such acts. A noble thought. Justice will finally deliver not just a sentence, but ratings. But why settle for a screen? Next time, hold it in a stadium. Advance tickets, family discounts. VIP boxes, a military band, cheerleaders waving pom-poms. Popcorn at the concession stands, and a sponsor’s message on the jumbotron: “Preserving human dignity is our highest priority.” Before the show, everyone could sing the national anthem, followed by a chaplain’s prayer. Then a minute of silence, so the crowd could reflect on the sanctity of human life. And then the show could begin. Others could watch online. Ad-free for premium subscribers. Part of the proceeds would, of course, promote human rights. We thought public executions belonged to the past. We were wrong. The marketing just wasn’t sophisticated enough.
